Terms of Service
Effective date: 30 July 2026
Last updated: 30 July 2026
1. Operator and scope
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern access to and use of Parlang, including:
- the Parlang2 mobile application, presented to users as “Parlang”;
- the websites at parlang.org and parlang.app;
- Parlang accounts, cloud synchronization, AI-assisted learning features, dictionary services, and associated online services; and
- the Parlang Developer and Reviewer Program and its administration console.
The Service is operated by Jiaxun Chen, operating as Parlang (“Parlang,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), at:
Affolternstrasse 56
8050 Zürich
Switzerland
Email: info@parlang.org
2. Acceptance of these Terms
By accessing or using the Service, creating an account, or participating in the Developer and Reviewer Program, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge the Privacy Policy.
If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization. In that case, “you” includes the organization.
If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.
3. Eligibility and minors
You must be at least 16 years old to create a Parlang account.
If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, your parent or legal guardian must review and accept these Terms and supervise your use of the Service. Guest use by younger learners should occur only under the supervision of a parent, guardian, or teacher and without providing personal information.
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and children under 13 may not create accounts or submit personal information.
4. The Service
Parlang is an educational language-learning service that may provide:
- multilingual and comparative dictionary access;
- guest access to selected features;
- personal study Books and learning plans;
- vocabulary collections and saved dictionary entries;
- language-level and learning-preference settings;
- cloze assessments, quick exams, scores, and study recommendations;
- pronunciation and text-to-speech playback;
- local study reminders and notifications;
- synchronization between supported devices and the web;
- AI-assisted generation of learning material;
- free, premium, invited, or otherwise restricted feature tiers; and
- developer and reviewer tools for reporting, reviewing, and correcting dictionary content.
Features may differ by device, account status, plan, country, language, or software version. Internet access is required for account, synchronization, AI, recovery-email, and other cloud features. Some dictionary functionality may remain available locally in the mobile application.
Parlang is a study aid. It does not guarantee a particular examination result, CEFR level, language proficiency, academic outcome, or professional qualification.
5. Accounts and authentication
Some features require an account. You agree to:
- provide accurate and current information;
- maintain only accounts you are authorized to use;
- protect your password, session, device, and authentication methods;
- promptly notify us of suspected unauthorized access; and
- accept responsibility for activity performed through your account unless caused by our breach of duty.
Accounts may be created with an email address and password or through an available third-party authentication provider, currently Google or Apple. Third-party authentication is also subject to that provider’s terms and privacy practices.
Passwords are handled by our authentication provider. Parlang does not intentionally store readable account passwords.
You may use the account-management page to update your profile, sign out, deactivate your account, or request account deletion. Deactivation restricts access but is not the same as deletion.
6. Licence to use the Service
Subject to these Terms, Parlang grants you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable right to access and use the Service for lawful educational or internal professional purposes.
Except where applicable law or an open-source licence expressly permits it, you may not:
- copy, sell, rent, sublicense, redistribute, or commercially exploit the Service;
- reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to obtain its source code;
- remove copyright, trademark, attribution, or proprietary notices;
- create a competing database, model, or service through systematic extraction;
- scrape, crawl, harvest, or bulk-download dictionary or account data;
- bypass account, access-tier, usage, rate, or security restrictions; or
- use Parlang branding in a manner suggesting endorsement or affiliation.
No ownership rights are transferred to you.
7. Acceptable use
You must not use the Service to:
- violate any law or another person’s rights;
- infringe copyright, trademark, privacy, confidentiality, database, or other rights;
- upload malicious code or interfere with the Service;
- probe, scan, or test systems without written authorization;
- obtain another user’s credentials, session, API key, or personal data;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent an affiliation;
- abuse account registration, recovery, invitation, or review systems;
- automate requests in a way that disrupts service availability or creates unreasonable cost;
- manipulate assessments, usage limits, reviewer permissions, or dictionary records;
- submit unlawful, threatening, hateful, discriminatory, sexually exploitative, or otherwise harmful material;
- use AI features to facilitate unlawful or harmful conduct;
- use another person’s provider account or API key without authorization; or
- transmit confidential, sensitive, or regulated information that is not necessary for language study.
We may investigate suspected misuse and restrict or suspend access where reasonably necessary to protect users, Parlang, service providers, or the public.
8. Your study content
“User Content” includes information you provide through the Service, such as:
- Book and collection names;
- study purposes, including custom free-text purposes;
- learning preferences and selected languages;
- quiz or assessment answers;
- support communications; and
- reports, suggestions, notes, and other submissions.
You retain your rights in User Content. You grant Parlang a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, transmit, format, process, and display User Content only as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, support, and improve the Service and to comply with law.
You represent that you have the rights necessary to provide your User Content and that its processing as described in these Terms and the Privacy Policy will not violate another person’s rights.
Do not enter health information, government identifiers, financial information, confidential employer information, or other sensitive personal data into Book names, custom purposes, reports, or AI-related fields.
9. Developer and Reviewer contributions
Developer and Reviewer Program participants may submit proposed corrections, definitions, examples, translations, formatting changes, reports, and review notes (“Contributions”).
You retain rights you may have in an original Contribution. You grant Parlang a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, transferable, sublicensable, royalty-free licence to use, edit, translate, combine, publish, distribute, and incorporate Contributions into Parlang’s dictionaries, applications, datasets, documentation, and related materials.
This licence survives account closure because accepted Contributions may become part of shared dictionary content and its integrity history.
You must not submit material copied from a third party unless you are authorized to do so. Parlang may accept, modify, reject, or remove any Contribution and is not required to provide attribution or compensation.
Program access is discretionary. Roles may be approved, denied, suspended, changed, or withdrawn to protect quality, security, and editorial integrity.
10. AI-assisted features
By default, Parlang’s AI-assisted learning features currently use Ollama Cloud to generate cloze questions or related study material.
An AI request may include your study level, study purpose, learning habits, selected language codes, display-language code, and dictionary candidate data such as terms, translations, semantic identifiers, and level bands. Your name, username, email address, password, and submitted assessment answers are not intentionally included in the inspected cloze-generation request.
You should not include identifying, confidential, or sensitive information in custom study-purpose fields.
Parlang intends to replace this external cloud-processing arrangement with a Parlang-controlled local-cloud hosting architecture in a future release. Until that replacement is operational, Ollama Cloud remains the active default provider. Parlang will update its Privacy Policy before introducing materially different processing, hosting locations, or data recipients.
AI-generated material may be incorrect, incomplete, biased, unsuitable, or inconsistent. You must review it before relying on it. AI-generated assessments and recommendations:
- are educational aids rather than official proficiency determinations;
- do not constitute academic, legal, medical, employment, or professional advice;
- may differ between requests; and
- are not guaranteed to meet a particular curriculum or examination standard.
Parlang may limit AI requests, change models, use fallback-generated material, or suspend an AI feature to control cost, safety, quality, or availability.
11. Personal API keys and third-party providers
Certain account tiers may allow you to enter an API key for an external AI or speech provider.
You represent that you are authorized to use every key you provide. You are responsible for:
- charges imposed by the provider;
- the provider’s terms, limits, security, and privacy practices;
- activity performed with your key; and
- promptly revoking a key that may have been exposed.
In the current mobile release, personal provider keys entered through settings are stored in the Apple Keychain on that device. Parlang does not guarantee that every listed provider or model is available or compatible.
Never share an organizational or third-party key unless its owner has authorized use with Parlang.
12. Fees, plans, and purchases
Parlang may offer free, premium, invited, promotional, or paid plans. Features and usage limits may differ between plans.
Before charging you, Parlang or the applicable app marketplace will display the price, currency, billing period, included features, renewal conditions, and cancellation process required by law.
Purchases made through Apple or another marketplace are also governed by that marketplace’s payment, cancellation, and refund rules. Except where required by law, Parlang cannot issue refunds for charges controlled solely by a marketplace.
Parlang may change future pricing or plan features. Changes to an existing paid subscription will take effect only with the notice and consent required by applicable law and marketplace rules.
13. Third-party services and content
The Service relies on third parties that may include hosting, database, authentication, email, identity, app-distribution, and AI providers.
Third-party services are governed by their own terms. Parlang is not responsible for third-party services outside its reasonable control, but this does not limit obligations that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Dictionary entries and other content may incorporate public-domain, open-licensed, or otherwise licensed sources. Any third-party attribution and licence notices remain applicable.
Links to external websites do not imply endorsement.
14. Intellectual property
The Service, including its software, design, branding, structure, original dictionary organization, images, interfaces, and documentation, is owned by or licensed to Parlang and protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.
“Parlang,” “Parlang2,” related names, logos, and product presentation may not be used without prior written permission, except for truthful reference to the Service.
To report alleged infringement, contact info@parlang.org with identification of the work, the disputed material, its location, your contact details, and the basis of your claim.
15. Feedback
If you send suggestions or general product feedback outside the formal Developer and Reviewer workflow, you permit Parlang to use that feedback without restriction or compensation. This does not transfer ownership of unrelated confidential materials.
16. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains the personal data we process, the providers involved, the purposes of processing, retention, international transfers, security measures, and your rights.
17. Service changes and availability
We may maintain, update, modify, suspend, or discontinue features. We will provide reasonable notice of material changes where practicable and legally required.
We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Availability may be affected by maintenance, internet conditions, app-store review, security events, provider outages, model availability, or circumstances outside our reasonable control.
You are responsible for maintaining copies of content you cannot afford to lose. Cloud synchronization and local storage are convenience features, not archival or backup guarantees.
18. Suspension and termination
You may stop using the Service at any time.
We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access if:
- you materially or repeatedly breach these Terms;
- your use creates a security, legal, safety, or operational risk;
- payment is overdue for a paid feature;
- a provider or authority requires us to act;
- an account appears fraudulent, compromised, or abandoned; or
- continued service is no longer reasonably possible.
Where appropriate, we will provide notice and an opportunity to remedy the issue. Immediate action may be taken for urgent security, safety, legal, or abuse concerns.
Upon termination, your licence ends. Provisions concerning ownership, Contributions, accrued payments, disclaimers, liability, disputes, and other provisions that by their nature should survive will remain effective.
19. Account and content deletion
You may request account deletion through the account-management page or by emailing info@parlang.org.
When a Book or collection is moved to Trash, Parlang schedules it for permanent deletion 30 days later. The deletion state is synchronized for signed-in users so that the corresponding account data is removed from both the local application and cloud storage. You may permanently delete an item before the 30-day period expires.
Account deletion is intended to delete the authentication account and user-linked cloud records, subject to:
- limited provider backup and recovery cycles;
- records required by law, fraud prevention, security, or dispute handling;
- Developer and Reviewer applications, accepted Contributions, or integrity audit records that must be retained; and
- information already incorporated into shared dictionary content, which may be retained without direct account identifiers where feasible.
Deleting an account does not necessarily erase independent copies remaining in device or operating-system backups. You may need to remove application data or backups separately.
20. Disclaimer of warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.”
Parlang disclaims implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, uninterrupted availability, accuracy, non-infringement, and compatibility, except where such warranties cannot lawfully be excluded.
Nothing in these Terms excludes mandatory consumer guarantees or liability for intentional misconduct, gross negligence, personal injury, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
21. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Parlang will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential loss, including loss of profits, opportunity, data, goodwill, or business interruption.
Parlang’s total aggregate liability arising from the Service will not exceed the greater of:
- CHF 100; or
- the amount you paid directly to Parlang for the Service during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.
These limitations do not apply to liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including liability arising from intent or gross negligence.
22. Responsibility for claims
If you use the Service for business purposes, participate in privileged developer or reviewer workflows, or misuse third-party rights or credentials, you agree—where permitted by law—to compensate Parlang for third-party claims and reasonable costs caused by your unlawful conduct, breach of these Terms, or unauthorized Contributions.
This provision does not apply to the extent a claim was caused by Parlang or where such responsibility cannot be imposed on a consumer under applicable law.
23. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by Swiss law, excluding conflict-of-law rules and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.
The courts of the City of Zürich, Switzerland, have jurisdiction, subject to any mandatory right of a consumer to bring or defend proceedings in the courts of their place of residence.
Before commencing proceedings, you and Parlang should attempt in good faith to resolve the issue by contacting info@parlang.org.
24. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms to reflect changes in the Service, law, security, providers, or business operations.
The updated Terms will show a new “Last updated” date. We will provide additional notice of material changes where required by law. If a change requires consent, it will not apply until consent is obtained.
Continued use after a non-consent-based update takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
25. Apple App Store terms
If you obtain the mobile application through Apple’s App Store:
- These Terms are between you and Parlang, not Apple.
- Apple is not responsible for operating, maintaining, or supporting Parlang.
- Your licence to the application remains subject to Apple’s applicable usage rules and Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement.
- Parlang, rather than Apple, is responsible for addressing claims concerning the application, subject to these Terms and applicable law.
- Apple has no warranty obligation except any refund obligation imposed by its marketplace rules.
- You represent that you are not prohibited from receiving or using the application under applicable trade-control laws.
- You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using the application.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this section and may enforce it.
If Apple’s mandatory terms conflict with these Terms concerning the App Store licence, Apple’s mandatory terms control for that licence.
26. General provisions
If a provision is invalid or unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum lawful extent and the remaining provisions will continue in effect.
Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
You may not transfer your rights or obligations without our consent. Parlang may transfer these Terms as part of a reorganization, financing, merger, acquisition, or transfer of the Service, subject to applicable law.
These Terms, the Privacy Policy, applicable purchase terms, and any expressly incorporated program terms constitute the agreement concerning the Service.
